Staying mentally and physically active positively impacts people’s physical and mental well-being. Engaging in mentally and physical stimulating activities can raise your quality of life, create a sense of structure and routine, and help fight off loneliness.
Here are some tips to help you get started with living a more active and fulfilling lifestyle:
1. Find a go-to physical activity
Whether walking, stretching, or doing light resistance training, find an activity you like doing and try to be consistent. The less pressure, the better. Start light and aim for at least 20 minutes of aerobic activity at a moderate intensity every day– that works out to over 2 hours every week. And remember, most exercises can be modified to meet your fitness level and ability.
2. Discover your creative side
Whether you’re an experienced artist or someone who has never touched a canvas, everyone expresses creativity in their own way. Explore those creative urges or try a new artistic hobby like an adult colouring book, drawing, painting, or even scrapbooking. All these activities can improve mental focus and you don’t need any experience to get started.
3. The more social time, the better
Many older adults suffer from isolation but being around others and feeling a sense of community can drastically improve your mental health. You should aim to be around others everyday – whether it’s sharing a meal, playing cards, or working on a puzzle, talking with someone, or even laughing, every little bit helps.
4. Sleep, sleep, sleep
Whether you’re seeing friends or going on a walk, never forget the importance of a good night’s sleep. While it is great to stay active and be around others, you still need to prioritize rest. Make sure you get 7-9 hours of sleep daily to ensure you have the energy to do it all over the next day and live a more active and healthier life.
